A recent study has shown that the consumption of alcohol during breastfeeding can have lasting effects on the development of offspring.
The study focused on a group of mice and found those exposed to alcohol during early development through breast milk experienced a decrease in brain size, smaller body growth, and weight reduction, with male and female brain weights affected differently at varying ages.
These mice also showed risk-taking behavior, abnormal stress regulation, and increased hyperactivity.
The study suggests that alcohol consumption during breastfeeding may hinder the efficient extraction of nutrients by the gut, leading to a reduction in protein synthesis in the small intestine and inhibiting nutrient absorption.
Further research is necessary to figure out safe maternal practices during early infancy, and increased public awareness is crucial in preventing Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD).
