A study published in Radiology revealed that MRI breast cancer scans are a more optimal option than mammograms for women with dense breasts.
According to the research, out of 132000 women who were mammogram negative, underwent MRI screening, and had dense breasts, over 500 had missed breast cancer detection.
Women over the age of 40 are usually advised to go for mammograms to check breast health and identify any suspicious symptoms. This can help start early treatment, prolong life, and reduce financial burdens.
Mammography is one of the best imaging techniques to detect signs of breast cancer. This technique uses X-rays to take deep images of the chest and detect early-stage breast cancer. However, X-rays can be harmful, and this imaging technique may, at times, also give false-positive or false-negative results.
Breast MRI scans are far safer and help confirm the diagnosis. But they too may show false-positive results, especially in women with average breast cancer risk. That’s why this method is usually not the primary breast cancer screening technique.
