A new study has found that adhering to a Mediterranean diet may lower the risk of developing preeclampsia during pregnancy.
Preeclampsia is a common pregnancy complication that may lead to hypertension and organ dysfunction, risking the life of both the mother and fetus.
According to the study, women who followed a Mediterranean diet had a 21% lower chance of having any negative outcomes during pregnancy.
Additionally, they had a 28% and 37% lower risk of developing preeclampsia/eclampsia and gestational diabetes, respectively. The study discovered that women over 35 saw the greatest benefit.
A healthy pregnancy Mediterranean diet includes vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains, legumes, fish, and limited red meat and alcohol.
The study suggests that following a good healthy diet during pregnancy could help prevent pregnancy complications and future heart problems, particularly in women of older age.
