According to a study by Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the effects of delirium – a common symptom in menopausal women with Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) – could be mitigated by estrogen.
Delirium is a mental health condition resulting in confusion or lack of awareness of the surroundings. Usually, delirium occurs because of infections. This condition is quite prevalent in women with UTIs, typically in the menopause phase.
Menopausal women naturally have low estrogen levels, which causes numerous health conditions such as an increased risk of heart attack, osteoporosis, and sexual dysfunction.
Estrogen therapy relieves painful symptoms of perimenopause, such as hot flashes, and offers protection against infections.
However, this study found that when mice with induced menopause were given estrogen, their delirium-related neural injuries were healed.
Hence, estrogen therapy could also be a useful treatment for delirium in women going through menopause.
