A study conducted by the scientists at Smidt Heart Institute discovered a new kind of heart attack called myocardial infarction with non-obstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA) that affected women.
MINOCA is characterized by blood flow issues without any arterial obstruction. Usually, when a patient experiences heart attack symptoms, the doctors explore the internal blockages through imaging techniques. However, with MINOCA, the cause of the heart attack remains unknown since there is no blocked vessel.
Despite that, research reveals instead of plaque build-up, the cause of MINOCA is suspected to be blood vessel erosion. Another highlighted reason for MINOCA is arterial spasms, common in pregnant women or those in the postpartum stage.
Per Cedar’s Sinai, MINOCA mostly affects non-white females. However, living a healthier lifestyle, eating a proper diet, getting sufficient sleep, and staying active can significantly reduce your risk of heart attacks.
