New research has confirmed that cranberry products effectively prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs).
UTIs are quite common, with about a third of women experiencing them at some point. Elderly individuals and those with spinal cord injuries are also more likely to develop UTIs.
Symptoms of UTIs include painful or uncomfortable urination, frequent urination, and a strong urge to urinate. Without treatment, UTIs can lead to serious complications like sepsis.
Per the research, cranberry juice and supplements decrease the risk of recurrent UTIs by up to 55%, particularly in women prone to UTIs after medical procedures.
However, cranberry products don’t offer any benefits to pregnant women, older adults, or individuals with bladder-emptying issues.
The study’s findings indicate that cranberry products can effectively prevent UTIs, especially for those at high risk.
